Weldon Irvine - Spirit Man LP First Pressing, Signed by the Artist (1975)

Weldon Irvine - Spirit Man LP First Pressing, Signed by the Artist (1975)

This is Don’s personal, first-press copy of his mentor Weldon Irvine’s 1975 RCA Records album, Spirit Man, given to him by the artist himself as a token of their friendship. A personalized inscription, written amidst the ghostly mist on the album’s back cover, reads: “To my main man, and Dear Brother, Donald Blackman, A man Ahead of his Times - Weldon Irvine.”

Recorded at RCA’s Studio D during Irvine’s prolific mid-’70s run, the album—one of Irvine’s best-loved releases—features sublime soul-jazz jams like “We Gettin’ Down” (famously sampled on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Award Tour”) and “Jungle Juice,” and includes contributions from Sonny Fortune and Charles Sullivan on alto sax and trumpet, among other notable New York musicians of the day.
