Frankie Crocker WBLS Subway Sign

This original subway advertising panel promotes Frankie Crocker, the influential New York radio DJ and program director associated with WBLS.

The sign dates from the pre-digital era of New York City subway advertising, when printed panels were physically mounted inside subway train carriages above passenger seating (and not covered in any way). According to Victor Simonelli, it was removed from a carriage after becoming partially detached.

Crocker was a central figure in shaping WBLS programming during the 1970s and 1980s, helping define the station’s role in disco, soul, and emerging dance music culture in New York. Subway advertising of this kind reflects the period’s physical, print-based promotional infrastructure.
